SBV (sorteerbedrijf Vlissingen)
Since 1971, SBV has processed marine materials into high-quality sand and gravel for the concrete industry in the Netherlands and Belgium. The end products are both KOMO and BENOR certified.
The material is extracted in the strait between Great Britain and France, where the southern North Sea connects to the Atlantic Ocean. At depths of 35 to 50 metres, trailing suction hopper dredgers such as the TSHD Krakesandt and TSHD Anchorage collect the material. To ensure a consistent sand-to-gravel ratio, part of the sand is washed away in screening towers on board. The coarse material is then transported to Vlissingen.
At SBV’s advanced facility, the material undergoes further processing. Washing removes salts, after which it is screened, stripped of lighter fractions such as wood, and carefully graded. This ensures a consistent composition that meets the strict requirements for aggregates, including those used in prestressed concrete.
The entire process is designed to minimise the use of mobile equipment, resulting in lower energy consumption and a more sustainable production process.
