Historic Building in Utrecht Gets a New Lease of Life: Gamma Focuses on Sustainability

2 March 2025

In 2002, ROVA, a subsidiary of De Hoop Terneuzen, took over the former Wickes DIY store on Steenovenweg in Utrecht and established a Gamma DIY store on the site. This historic building, which originally served as a fruit and vegetable auction house at the beginning of the last century, is now undergoing a major renovation with a strong focus on sustainability. In collaboration with Hoogvliet Supermarkets, the property is being transformed into a modern, energy-efficient, and future-proof location.

In early June, a completely refurbished Gamma store will open here, fully tailored to meet the needs of today’s consumers. Alongside a carefully curated product range, the new Gamma will offer an innovative and energy-efficient shopping environment. Upon opening, the building will meet the highest sustainability standards (A+++++), featuring advanced insulation, energy-saving lighting, and efficient climate control. This makes Gamma not only a destination for DIY enthusiasts but also a shining example of responsible entrepreneurship within the construction sector.

Through this development, a characteristic Utrecht building is given a new purpose; honouring its past while embracing the future.
