Introduction of hydrogen-powered concrete mixer

20 August 2024

New step forward in sustainable construction supply

In recent years, the supply chain to the construction industry has become more sustainable in many ways. A consortium of concrete plants and partner companies, including De Hoop Betonmortel, is now taking the next step forward in greening the sector: a concrete mixer powered by hydrogen.

Sustainable extraction of raw materials and environmental enrichment are already firmly embedded in the operations of the concrete plants involved in this initiative. The Concrete Agreement and the use of CSC-certified materials are examples of this commitment.

Collaboration

Eight concrete plants, including De Hoop Betonmortel, have joined this industry-wide initiative. Together, they form a consortium with GINAF and Mesken BV, the companies responsible for the development of the truck and the mixer.

Electric propulsion would require a large and heavy battery pack for such a vehicle, which is why the consortium opted for hydrogen as a perfectly clean alternative. The concrete truck will literally emit water instead of harmful emissions from its first journey in early 2025: the solution for sustainable transportation in construction supply. The two fuel cells in the new truck will generate the same horsepower as current diesel engines, ensuring no compromises on load capacity or range.

Development

The development of this innovative vehicle has been carried out through a DKTI project (Demonstration of Climate Technologies and Innovations in Transport), with all consortium partners involved. In the long term, this innovation will make the entire industry more sustainable and efficient.

The collaborating companies are convinced that hydrogen is the future for the sustainability of our industry. We are proud to be at the forefront of its development.
